Living Room Speaker Setup Guide

Living Room Speaker Setup Guide

One of the primary rooms in a home where sound systems are found, the speakers in a living room should be placed with consideration not just for room aesthetics, but for optimum sound performance. Incorrect placement of speakers will hamper sound quality, but proper speaker placement can really bring out the best in a sound system.

Experiment with different positions and listen to the results. It may take some trial and error. For a two-speaker stereo setup in a living room, if the screen or sound source is 8 to 12 feet in front of the viewer or listener, each speaker should be placed 3 to 4 feet from the center of the screen, with one speaker on each side. This symmetry will properly balance the sound output. The speakers should be placed at about the same height as a person's ears when in a seated position. Angling your speakers slightly inward toward the listener/viewer at a 22- to 30-degree angle is ideal for creating a cone of sound.
